The Angolan government has made remarkable achievements in landmine clearance in the past few years thanks to a demining program underway in the country, an Angolan senior official said on Tuesday.

Joao Baptista Kussumua, coordinator of the Executive Demining Commission, told reporters that "about 50,000 square km of land have been cleared of landmines under the demining program."

According to Kussumua, 2 million unexploded ordnance and more than 600 tons of other war materials have been destroyed since the program started in the country after the 27-year civil war ended in 2002.

Meanwhile, the government has also intensified efforts to carry out construction projects of infrastructures, particularly power supply, transmission and distribution networks across the country.

Kussumua, who is also minister of social welfare, said the government has established some 1,170 km of power transmission lines across the country.

The coordinator also appealed to all Angolans involved in the demining program to take this task as a challenge for the country's economic development.
