Eleven Egyptian trucks loaded with sugar and medical supplies for Palestinians in the Gaza Strip were moving towards their destinations after crossing Karem Salem checkpoint in southern Rafah, the official MENA news agency reported Tuesday.
This batch of aid, provided by the Egyptian Red Crescent, included 126 tons of sugar and 8.5 tons of medical supplies, said the report.
Contacts were under way with Palestinian officials to deliver the aid as soon as possible, a senior official of the Egyptian relief body Mohamed Abdullah was quoted as saying.
Abdullah added that the association had already sent 1,500 tons of flour, sugar, rice and medical supplies to help Palestinians living in Gaza.
The Egyptian Red Crescent was making further efforts to sent 600 tons of flour, rice and sugar into Gaza for the upcoming holy Muslim fasting month of Ramadan, Abdullah said.
Since Hamas takeover in mid-June, the coastal strip has been facing a deeper humanitarian crisis and becoming more isolated from the world after all crossings and passages were shut down by Israel for more than two months.
The Gaza Strip, with a total population of about 1.5 million, heavily depends on outside aid inflow of almost everything, from basic foodstuffs to medicine.
