The United Arab Emirates (UAE) had decided to extend the grace period for illegal residents to leave the country to Nov. 2, the official Emirates News Agency reported on Tuesday.
The additional grace period will not be an extension of the amnesty period that was stipulated by an earlier decision by the UAE cabinet to end on Sep. 2, Interior Minister Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan was quoted as saying.
Therefore, only those who have completed the legal procedures of exiting can benefit from this extension and no new processing will not be allowed after Sep. 2, Sheikh Saif said.
The move aims to help those who were not able to book tickets and to facilitate their departure without complications, he explained.
The minister urged all the concerned departments to implement strict legal measures as soon as the prescribed period expires.
The UAE cabinet decided in June that a period of three months from June 3 would be given to provide all expatriates present illegally in the UAE with an opportunity to regularize their situation according to the law, or to leave the country, without penalty.
The cabinet decision on amnesty also proposed strict punishments on violating employers after the amnesty period.
The UAE, with the second largest economy and the largest GDP per capita in the Arab world, employs several million foreign workers.
