U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice congratulated new Japanese foreign minister Nobutaka Machimura in a telephone call, said State Department deputy spokesman Tom Casey on Tuesday.

Rice expressed hope that she will see the Japanese foreign minister "in the not too distant future" and look forward to working with him in his new title, Casey said.

To regain support, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe reshuffled his cabinet on Monday and appointed veteran Machimura as the new foreign minister.

Japan has been an important U.S. ally in East Asia.
