Chile's Supreme Court on Tuesday decided to delay a vote on whether former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori must be extradited to face corruption and human rights charges at home.
"There's no agreement and while there is no agreement, no ruling can be issued," said Supreme Court President Alberto Chaigneau after a closed-door session of the five members of the Court's Criminal Panel. "It's a very complex case."
The court said it had only finished examining one of the 12 charges against Fujimori, Peru's president from 1990 to 2000.
The date for the vote must be decided before Sept. 5 because Chaigneau is scheduled to leave the country for an international conference.
The five judges are reviewing a July 11 ruling made by lower court Judge Orlando Alvarez, which rejected Peru's extradition request.
The review came after last week's debate on the Fujimori case with Fujimori's defense team and Peruvian government lawyers presenting their arguments.
Fujimori is currently under house arrest in an exclusive condominium in the Chicureo locality, on the outskirts of the Chilean capital. He arrived in Chile in November 2005, ending a five-year exile in Japan.
During his stay in Chile, Fujimori unsuccessfully ran for the Japanese Senate. He holds both Japanese and Peruvian nationalities.
