President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva nominated Tuesday conservative judge Carlos Alberto Direito to a seat at Brazil's Federal Supreme Court (STF).
If approved by the Federal Senate, Direito, who turns 65 on Sept. 8, the age limit for a STF judge, will take over the position from a retired judge. The mandatory retirement age for a STF judge is 70.
Direito, currently a judge at the Supreme Court of Justice (STJ), has been named for his connections with the conservative sectors, especially the Catholic Church.
He is against abortion and closely associated with the Catholic clergy on issues concerning social behavior. He is also a member of the Brazilian Democratic Movement Party (PMDB), an ally of the current government.
According to the government, Direito's nomination had been suggested by Minister of Defense Nelson Jobim, a former STF judge.
