The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) announced on Tuesday that pre-qualification of bidders for the design and construction of locks on the inter-oceanic Canal has begun.
In the pre-qualification period, the ACP will evaluate companies based on their qualifications, experience and ability. The four best companies will qualify for the second bidding, slated for November.
"We hope that companies from across the world will respond to the prequalification, given that it is the largest contract in the canal's expansion program," ACP's Executive Vice President Jorge Luis Quijano said.
"In recent months we have seen confirmation from international companies interested in taking part, all interested in undertaking a world-class construction and design project. We expect to award the contract towards the end of next year," he said.
The prequalification includes a site inspection on Sept. 12 and an information meeting the next day. The Panama Canal expansion project costs 5.25 billion U.S. dollars.
The event will be formally opened on Sept. 3.
