The Vietnamese government has decided to establish 16 general departments and state agencies equivalent to general departments under ministries, local newspaper Pioneer reported Wednesday.

In a monthly cabinet meeting ending on Tuesday, the government agreed in principle with the formation of the General Department of Taxation, the General Department of Vietnam Customs, the State Treasury and the State Securities Commission under the Finance Ministry, the General Statistics Office under the Ministry of Planning and Investment, the Directorate for Standards and Quality under the Ministry of Science and Technology,

Some other departments will include the General Department for Vocational Training under the Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs, the Committee for Overseas Vietnamese and the National Border Committee under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism and the General Department of Sports and Physical Training under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism,

New bodies are also including the General Department of Population under the Ministry of Health, the three committees of Emulation-Reward, Region and Code under the Interior Ministry, and the General Department of Sea and Islands under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment.

At the meeting, Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung authorized ministers to appoint or dismiss directors and vice directors of the general departments and state agencies equivalent to general departments.

Most of the general departments and state agencies equivalent to general departments have already been operational for years as agencies equivalent to ministries. Vietnam's recent restructure of ministries will make them operate under the ministries in the near future.
