India has invited bids for a 10. 24-billion U.S. dollar-fighter-jet contract, the Hindu reported Wednesday.

The move is part of modernization plans for the Indian Air Force (IAF) that wants to induct at least 126 new fighter jets, the report said.

It quoted an official statement as saying the new jets would replace some MiG-21 versions being phased out.

Lockheed Martin Corp., Boeing Co, Russia's MiG Corp., pan- European manufacturer Eurofighter GmbH, Sweden's Saab AB and Dassault Aviation SA of France are the six aircraft manufacturers that India has chosen to bid for what is billed as the largest defense contract in the world for 15 years.
