Islamic Hamas movement on Wednesday welcomed the election of former Turkish foreign minister Abdullah Gul as Turkey's new president.
Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri said he hopes "this historical alternation will contribute to help the Turkish people and the people of the region, especially the Palestinian people."
Hamas, which won Palestinian parliamentary elections in January 2006, also called on the Western nations to deal with people of the Middle East "in a way respecting their culture rather than on the basis of extortion."
The international community doesn't deal with Hamas since the Islamic movement's charter calls for the destruction of Israel.
Gul, 56, was elected as Turkey's new president in the third round of presidential voting in the parliament on Tuesday. Turkey's secular elite had opposed his nomination because of his Islamic background.
