India's federal religious rights watchdog Wednesday took cognizance of police joining a mob to punch, kick and drag a Muslim down a street in an eastern state because he allegedly tried to steal a gold chain.

India's National Commission for Minorities (NCM) under the federal government is set to seek report from the state government of Bihar on the police beating there of Mohammad Aurangzeb, an incident that highlighted widespread problem of police brutality in India, a senior commission member told Xinhua on condition of anonymity

The commission could also recommend registration of criminal cases against the policeman who were shown on national TV stations beating Aurangzeb, who was tied to a motorcycle and dragged down a street in Bihar's Bhagalpur city.
