Former Bangladeshi jute minister of the immediate past government Shahjahan Siraj, his wife and son were sentenced to eight years each on Wednesday for tax evasion.
The punishment was given by a special court in capital Dhaka for trying high-profile corruption suspects. The court also fined Shahjahan Siraj and his son 200,000 taka (about 2857 U.S. dollars) each, in default.
The accused Siraj family were tried in absentia as they are on the run.
A set of cases against the Siraj family for evading income tax were filed by Bangladeshi National Board of Revenue (NBR) earlier.
Siraj was the jute minister in the immediate past government led by Khaleda Zia, chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party.
