About 105 young men from Diffa region, about 1,300 kms to the east of the Nigerian capital Niamey, surrendered weapons and munitions Wednesday in the presence of the public health minister Issa Lamine.
The voluntary surrender of weapons which took place in Dorolelewa, 60 kms from N'guigmi is in response to the Nigerian President Mamadou Tandja's appeal for peace in the country.
The governor of Diffa region Oumarou Yacouba appealed to all inhabitants to "cultivate the values of peace, tolerance, understanding, fraternity, solidarity and dialogue."
Yacouba assured the young men that "they will not be taken to court" and urged them to start working for the "restoration of lasting peace and national harmony."
