Mayors from regions surrounding the Brdy military district in the Czech Republic have formed an association to fight controversial proposals to build a U.S. radar station in the area, Pribram Mayor Josef Rihak said Wednesday.
"We want to address mayors not only in the Brdy locality, but in the whole of the Czech Republic," said Rihak, coordinator of the association.
Jan Neoral, Mayor of Trokavec, also a member of the coordination committee, said that about 50 mayors from other parts of the country had already voiced their support for the initiative by opponents of the radar base.
Rihak said communication between the municipalities and the central government on the radar issue had so far been poor.
He recalled that 16 mayors in March urged Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek to provide them with information on the radar base talks, but they have received no answers to date.
"The government is definitely not giving enough information to us to clearly understand their argument why the stationing of the radar site on our territory is such an excellent idea," said Jitka Rihova, another coordinator of the association.
The United States unveiled its plan in January to place a radar system in the Czech Republic. The plan also proposes that 10 long-range interceptors capable of shooting down missiles be stationed in Poland.
According to a recent opinion poll, more than two thirds of Czech citizens oppose the base.
