The South Korean government is taking measures to support Vietnamese women in their marriages to South Korean men, an ambassador to Vietnam was quoted by Vietnam News newspaper on Friday as saying.
Support measures include drafting a new law on the management of cross border matchmaking, publishing books in Vietnamese on bearing and raising children, facts on rural life in South Korea, etc. The country's Ministry of Gender and Family is also planning to send their staff to Vietnam to interview local women who intend to marry South Korean men before approving their cases, said South Korean Ambassador to Vietnam Kim Eui-ki.
The measures aimed at coping with the fact that many Vietnamese women were not happy with their South Korean partners due to a lack of information on cross-cultural marriages. The Vietnamese brides would be given a pre-departure orientation on Korean culture and lifestyle, as well as brochures and flyers for an emergency hotline, in case they need help from authorized agencies, said the ambassador.
An unhappy life has led to the recent deaths of two Vietnamese women in South Korea. One died in April after falling from the 9th floor of a building, intended to escape her husband and her disastrous married life, and the other was beaten to death by her husband earlier this month, said the newspaper.
Cross-cultural marriages between Vietnamese and South Koreans have been growing rapidly over the last three years. Statistics show that there are 5,822 cases in 2005 and 10,131 in 2006. Vietnamese partners account for 33.5 percent of all cross-cultural marriages in South Korea, the paper said.
