U.S. President George W. Bush will host the current European Union president, Portuguese Prime Minister Jose Socrates, to the White House on Sept. 12, the White House said in a statement Thursday.
The two leaders will discuss a wide range of issues of shared interest, including transatlantic relations, advancing peace in Afghanistan and Iraq, ending the conflicts in Sudan's Darfur and enhancing cooperation in international trade, energy security and climate change, the statement said.
"The president welcomes the opportunity to discuss with the prime minister ways to build on our strong relations with the European Union under Portuguese leadership," the statement added.
