Peru backs bids of Colombia and Ecuador to join the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum (APEC) in order to increase Latin America's presence in the bloc, Peru's Vice Foreign Minister Gonzalo Gutierrez said on Friday.
"We believe APEC should be reinforced with Latin American countries. We are scarcely three: Chile, Mexico and Peru; and, surely Ecuador and Colombia are countries that can perfectly adjust themselves to APEC's parameters and requirements," Gutierrez said.
Representatives from APEC's Latin American members held a meeting last week in Lima to generate a common goal to promote "our countries' better trade insertion in Asia," the minister said.
"It is convenient for us to have a joint front. And that is reinforced with greater Latin American presence in APEC's decision making," he added.
