The Bolivian government summoned on Friday department officials and civic leaders from the administrative capital of La Paz and the Chuquisaca province to meet on Sept. 3 to discuss Sucre's "full capital status."
According to reports reaching here, Sucre, capital of Chuquisaca, has not been stable in the past weeks since its inhabitants have been demanding to restore its status as Bolivia's political capital and headquarters of the country's executive and legislative powers which are currently established in La Paz.
Protesters clashed with store owners in six major cities Tuesday during a strike called by anti-government groups to demand moving Bolivia's capital to Sucre, which is stated as the country's political capital in the Constitution.
La Paz was chosen as the country's administrative capital in 1895 at the end of a civil war. It now harbors the executive and legislative powers. The country's judicial branch is seated in Sucre.
