Afghan and the U.S.-led coalition forces killed almost two dozen Taliban militants in southern Afghanistan, a coalition statement said Saturday.

An Afghan and U.S. patrol was ambushed by militants on Friday in Musa Qala district of Helmand province, the statement said.

The patrol called for close air support and tactically maneuvered against the militants, it added.

"In the fight that ensued, almost two dozen insurgents were killed," according to the statement, which said no Afghan and coalition soldiers were injured.

Due to rising Taliban violence, over 4,200 persons, most of whom were Taliban militants, have been killed in Afghanistan this year.
