A roadside bomb exploded near an Iraqi army patrol in the city of Mosul in northern Iraq on Saturday, killing five soldiers, an Iraqi army source said.
"A roadside bomb went off around a passing Iraqi army patrol in the al-Rashidiya area in northern Mosul on midday, destroying a military vehicle and killing five soldiers aboard," the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.
The blast also damaged several nearby civilian cars and buildings, the source said.
Ambulances transported the victims to a nearby hospital while security forces cordoned off the scene immediately after the blast, he added.
Earlier, six people were injured, including two soldiers, when a suicide car bomber struck an Iraqi army patrol in southern part of the city, the source said.
Mosul, some 400 km north of Baghdad, has long been a hotbed of insurgency and sectarian violence since the U.S.-led invasion in 2003.
