Lebanese Prime Minister Fouad Seniora Saturday vowed to reconstruct Nahr al-Bared refugee camp which has been witnessed clashes between the army and Fatah al- Islam militants for months.

The reconstruction of Nahr al-Bared refugee camp is considered a reinstatement of the Lebanese state's role, Seniora said at a preparatory meeting for a donors' conference, slated for September 10 for the reconstruction of the northern Palestinian refugee camp.

The prime minister noted that his government was working with international bodies on development projects that would improve the social and economic conditions of the Lebanese people living around Nahr al-Bared, in line with the camp's reconstruction plan and in preparation for the return of Palestinian refugees.

Projects include infrastructure, roads and schools, and the government had placed a plan and was executing it prior to the events in the camp, Seniora explained, adding that contracts had been signed for projects worth 120 million U.S. dollars which had been underway.

The Lebanese army have been battling with the militants of Fatah al-Islam in the Nahr al-Bared camp since May 20. The camp has been almost totally destroyed by intense tank, artillery and helicopter fire from the army, which is trying to force the Fatah al-Islam group to surrender.

Most of the camp's 40,000 residents fled to a nearby Palestinian refugee camp in the first days of fighting.

The bloodiest internal violence since the Lebanese 1975-1990 civil war has killed more than 200 people.
