Newly-built naval forces of Hamas announced on Sunday they expelled two Israeli helicopters that hovered over central Gaza Strip with machine gunfire.

The naval forces said they "compelled the aircraft to flee" in the first ever shooting at an Israeli aircraft with heavy machine gunfire.

Local witnesses also reported that two explosions were heard inside the naval forces headquarters in Deir al-Balah town in central Gaza Strip.

Meanwhile, Hamas' Executive Forces which police the Gaza Strip reported on its website that the naval forces have opened fire at the two helicopters.

The helicopters returned shortly and fired at least one missile at the marine police site, witnesses said.

Hospital officials in the town said the airstrike has lightly wounded one.

The Islamic movement Hamas took control of the Gaza Strip on June 14 after routing Fatah movement loyal to President Mahmoud Abbas.

The new Gaza ruler restructured the security services and propped them up with Hamas fighters after the former officers who abided by Abbas' orders did not cooperate with Hamas.
