Sam Rainsy Party (SRP), the third major party of Cambodia, has appealed to get finance from supporters to conduct its extraordinary congress for the general election in 2008, a party statement said on Sunday.
"I would like to appeal to party supporters in and out the country to provide financial support for the party congress according to their abilities," Sam Rainsy, president of SRP, said in the statement.
The SRP needs 16,000 U.S. dollars to pay for food, renting chairs and other expenditures, the statement added.
SRP plans to hold the congress on Sept. 8-9 and about 7,000 participants will attend it, the statement said.
The SRP made strong gains in the commune elections this year, capturing 23.4 percent of the 11,353 commune council seats across the nation.
In the 2003 general election, SRP had 24 of 123 parliamentarians. The ruling Cambodian People's Party stood first for 76 MPs and the co-ruling Funcinpec Party for 26 MPs.
