The Sudanese government welcomed on Sunday an upcoming visit of UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon in Sudan which will start on Monday.
The Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement that "it looks forward for fruitful talks with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and the accompanying delegation."
"Ban Ki-moon's visit to Sudan comes as a boost to the efforts of Sudan and the international community for implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) in southern Sudan and solution of Darfur problem," the statement added.
The UN chief's visit to Sudan comes one month after the UN Security Council adopted a resolution approving a hybrid peacekeeping operation of the UN and the African Union in the conflict-torn western Sudanese region of Darfur.
Explaining the purpose of his visit, Ban Ki-moon told a press conference on Tuesday he wanted to go and see for himself "the very difficult conditions" in Darfur.
"I want to create the foundations of a lasting peace and security. My goal is to lock in the progress we have made so far. To build on it so that this terrible trauma may one day cease", the UN chief added.
