Jordan's King Abdullah II on Sunday met with Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi and urged EU nations to play a more effective role in the efforts to resume peace negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians.
"EU member states, particularly Italy, should play a more effective role to back Arab and international efforts tailored to bring the Palestinian and Israeli sides back to the table of negotiations", Abdullah was quoted by a Royal palace statement as saying.
Abdullah stressed the necessity to make use of the time element in the coming phase to bring the two sides closer together, particularly in the light of a U.S.-proposed international conference to discuss practical steps to forge ahead with the peace process, the statement said.
On July 16, U.S. President George W. Bush proposed that an international conference would be held this fall, which would include Israel, the Palestinians, and some neighboring Arab states, to help resume the stalled Middle East peace talks.
On his part, Prodi reviewed his country's efforts and those of EU states to revitalize the peace making process in the region.
Talks between Abdullah II and Prodi also dealt with the situation in Iraq and the political crisis in Lebanon, said the palace statement.
Prodi arrived in Amman on Saturday night for a two-day visit to Jordan. The visit to Jordan was part of his regional tour which will also take him to Lebanon, Syria and Israel.
