The Democratic People's Republic of Korea(DPRK) on Monday lashed out at the United States for conducting joint military exercises with South Korea, saying such policy will undermine the denuclearization and peace process on the Korean Peninsula.

"This (exercises) was an open hostile act against the DPRK and an unpardonable criminal move to stem the trend of the development of the situation on the Korean Peninsula toward detente and peace, " the leading official newspaper Rodong Sinmun said.

The U.S. and South Korea held the "Ulchi Focus Lens" annual joint military exercises in South Korea from Aug. 20 to 31, which involved some10,000 U.S. troops.

"The U.S. hostile policy toward the DPRK still remains unchanged," it noted.

The DPRK had repeatedly demanded the U.S. to abandon its hostile policy against Pyongyang, which is considered a key element in the settlement of nuclear dispute between the two countries.

"... The points agreed upon at the six-party talks ... are in the process of implementation," Rodong Sinmun said, adding that "the U.S., however, staged such provocative joint military exercises against the DPRK ... this diametrically runs counter to the cause of peace and reunification of the Korean Peninsula."

On the same day, the newspaper also accused Washington of deploying plenty of advanced weapons such as F-22 Raptor stealth fighters around the DPRK as a preparation for preemptive attack.

Despite such sharp comments, the DPRK has agreed to declare and disable all its nuclear facilities by the end of this year during the two-day bilateral talks with the U.S., which were concluded one day before in Geneva.

Some 28,000 U.S. troops are stationed in South Korea as a legacy of the 1950-53 Korean War that ended in a cease-fire, not a peace treaty, leaving the two Koreas technically at war.
