Turkey will distribute five truck loads of humanitarian assistance, including tents, blankets and foodstuffs, to Iraqi refugees living in Syria, said Turkish Red Crescent Director General Tekin Kucukali on Monday.

With a cooperation protocol between the Turkish Red Crescent and Syrian Red Crescent, the former will begin the humanitarian assistance operation soon, Kucukali was quoted by the Anatolia news agency as saying.

Kucukali said, "We sent aid to Syria in the past which were designed for Lebanese people. This is the first time that such a great assistance has been sent to Iraqi refugees living in Syria by the Turkish Red Crescent."

"Around one million Iraqi refugees living in Syria are in difficult conditions. It is our humanitarian duty to help the Iraqis," stressed Kucukali.

According to Kucukali, two of the trucks will go to the northwestern Syrian city of Aleppo, while the other three trucks will go to Damascus.

The Turkish Red Crescent will open an office in Damascus, said Kucukali.

Syria currently hosts the largest number of Iraqi refugees, totalling more than 1.5 million.
