Bangladeshi immediate past prime minister and chairperson of former ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Khaleda Zia on Monday expelled BNP No. 2 leader General Secretary Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan after she was arrested by the government early hours Monday.
Her lawyer Barrister Rafiqul Islam quoted her as saying that Zia has expelled Mannan Bhuyian from the BNP because he has been maintaining isolation from her since the current caretaker government took office and attempted to drop Zia from the party position.
Hannan Shah, adviser to Zia, said on Monday in a press conference that Zia signed on an expulsion letter on Sunday. The letter was read by Hannan Shah, in which Zia blamed Mannan Bhuiyan for violating the party constitution and party discipline. In the letter Zia also accused Bhuiyan of attempting to divide the party.
She wrote, "I cannot be silent spectator of the party. So, I am expelling you."
Mannan Bhuiyan said in a press conference Monday the decision to expel him was undemocratic and unconstitutional, He couldn't accept.
Bhuiyan, who had been doing leftist politics, joined the BNP and was made Secretary General of the party in the 1990s.
Bhuyian isolated him from Zia after Tareque Rahman, Zia's eldest son and Senior Joint Secretary General of the party, was arrested by the present caretaker government in March this year.
Bhuiyan also attempted to call a council meeting of the BNP to drop her from party position, but later did not call the council meeting on the plea that indoor politics is now banned in the country.
