To assist Bangladesh's effort to hold a credible election, the South Korean government has donated 500,000 U.S. dollars to the country to prepare the voter list with photographs, local newspaper The Daily Star reported Tuesday quoting the a press release.
"We sincerely hope that Korea's contribution to the efforts of the Bangladeshi Government for credible, safe and fair election would lead to achieve good governance and national development," said the ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Bangladesh Park Suk Bum.
"Korean people are pleased to participate in the international effort in helping Bangladesh overcome difficulties and make progress for the future," he added.
South Korea will provide the fund through a project of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), called "Preparation of Electoral Roll with Photograph" (PERP). It is being implemented by Bangladesh Election Commission, the constitutional body responsible for conducting elections.
PERP project is jointly funded by the government of Bangladesh and other major development partners -- UNDP, UK government, the European Commission, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, Denmark and South Korea.
The preparation of the voter list with photographs in Bangladesh has already started and will be completed by October 2008 while the general election will be held by the end of next year, according to the roadmap announced by the Election Commission in mid-July.
