Five Iraqi soldiers were killed on Tuesday by a roadside bombing near their patrol in the vicinity of the town of Beiji in Salahudin province, north of Baghdad, a source from U.S. and Iraqi liaison office said.
"A roadside bomb detonated before noon near an Iraq Army patrol near the town of Beiji, some 200 km north of Baghdad," the source from the Joint Coordination Center (JCC) in Tikrit told Xinhua.
The blast destroyed a military vehicle and killed four soldiers aboard, including an officer, the JCC source said.
Iraqi security forces immediately cordoned off the area to secure the scene and evacuated the casualties, he added.
Salahudin province is a Sunni insurgents' stronghold and is part of what so-called "Sunni triangle" in north and west of Baghdad. It has long been the hot bed of insurgency against the U. S. occupation forces since the U.S.-led invasion in 2003.
