A Taliban commander, who was responsible for a recent kidnapping of 23 South Koreans, was killed in Ghazni province of central Afghanistan, provincial police chief Ali Shah Ahmadzai said Tuesday.

Afghan and foreign troops carried out an operation in Qarabagh district on Monday night, and it lasted until early Tuesday, Ahmadzai told Xinhua.

During the operation, Mullah Mateen and 15 other Taliban militants were killed, he said.

Mullah Mateen and another Taliban commander Mullah Abdullah Jan were the key players in the abduction of the 23 South Koreans, according to Afghan officials.

The South Koreans were kidnapped by Taliban militants in Qarabagh district on July 19. Two of the hostages were executed, while the others were released.

Due to rising Taliban violence, over 4,300 people, most of whom were Taliban militants, have been killed in Afghanistan this year.
