Representative of the United Nations (UN) High Commissioner for Human Rights in Nepal Richard Bennett arrived here Tuesday to take up his duties.

According to a press release issued by the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in Nepal (OHCHR- Nepal), upon his arrival at the Tribhuvan International Airport, Bennett said, "Thank you for coming to meet me here today. I am very happy to be in Nepal and starting my work as the Representative of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights at this critical time in the life of your country."

Bennett has been serving since August 2004 as the Representative of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in Afghanistan, and has worked with the United Nations in senior human rights posts in Timor-Leste and Sierra Leone since 2000.

Prior to joining the United Nations, he worked for many years with the New Zealand Human Rights Commission and Ministry of Justice.
