Afghan and the U.S.-led coalition forces killed 10 Taliban rebels in Uruzgan province of southern Afghanistan Tuesday morning, a coalition statement said.
Some insurgents fired mortars against the Anaconda coalition base in the province, but missed the target, the statement said.
After a brief lull, the heavily-defended firebase was notified that more than 20 enemy fighters were attacking an observation post east of the base, it said.
Afghan and coalition forces used a combination of small arms and heavy weapons as well as coalition close air support to repel the enemy advance, it added.
"Ten insurgents, including a regional Taliban sub-commander, were confirmed killed by direct fire in the attack," according to the statement.
No Afghan and coalition soldiers were injured in the conflict, it said.
About 13,000 coalition soldiers are being deployed in Afghanistan to fight militants and keep security.
Due to rising Taliban violence, over 4,300 persons, most of whom were Taliban militants, have been killed in Afghanistan this year.
