Another round of talks with the U.S. on a possible deployment in Poland of an anti-missile defense base will be held here on Thursday and Friday, the spokesman for Polish Foreign Minister Robert Szaniawski said Tuesday.
"It will be a particularly important stage in the talks. It will concern the terms on which a possible agreement will be signed that will lay down all details of mutual obligations," the PAP news agency quoted Szaniawski as saying.
Poland would like to finish the talks by the end of this year, but this was not a firm deadline, he added.
"Poland wants to sign a long-term accord that will give Poland benefits in the area of security, political and technological cooperation with the US," the spokesman continued, "If the base comes into being, Poland wants it to be subject to Polish jurisdiction. The construction and operation of such a base must not be financed by Polish taxpayers."
The United States wants to deploy part of its anti-missile shield in eastern Europe -- a radar system in the Czech Republic and a missile interceptor site in Poland. Polish-U.S. talks on the possible deployment have been ongoing since May of this year.
