International Quartet's Middle East envoy Tony Blair arrived in Jerusalem on Tuesday for pressing the peace process between Israel and Palestine, said Israeli government's press office.
Blair met with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, discussing the Palestinian issue and Blair's mission to the Palestinian National Authority (PNA), the press office said in a statement.
According to the statement, Blair presented a series of practical issues for progress between Israel and the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) in the fields of administration, economy, security and the public sector, as preparation for the international peace conference scheduled to be hold in Washington in November.
Olmert has promised to give all necessary assistance to assure the success of Blair's mission, said the statement, adding the two sides agreed to be in continuous contact during Blair's mission.
Blair began his second trip to the Middle East on Tuesday.
After talks in Egypt with President Hosni Mubarak, the former British leader had a private dinner with Olmert in Jerusalem and planned extensive talks with other senior officials during his days-long stay.
Israeli daily Ha'aretz quoted some officials as saying that Blair's visit is exploratory in nature and no breakthroughs should be expected.
But Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Mark Regev said Blair had a vital job in efforts to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
"For peace to exist there has to be a stable and healthy Palestinian state," he said, adding "Blair has a crucial job in helping the Palestinians create the institutions and the mechanisms, and we support him in that mission."
