The Czech government has decided to hire a public relations agency to promote a planned U.S. missile defense system on Czech soil, government coordinator Tomas Klvana said on Tuesday.

AMI Communication was selected from five bidders for the information campaign, which is to be launched later this month.

The firm will cooperate with Klvana's three-member team. The budget of the campaign is expected between 12 million crowns (591, 366 U.S. dollars) and 15 million crowns (739,207.6 dollars), reports said.

The U.S. unveiled its plan in January to place in Poland 10 long-range interceptors capable of shooting down missiles and a radar system in the Czech Republic.

A recent opinion poll shows that more than two thirds of the Czech citizens are against such a base in their country. However, the Czech center-right government advocates the U.S. project.

The opposition Social Democrats and the Communists demand that a referendum be held on the issue.
