Two Russian warships arrived in South Korea's southern port of Busan on Wednesday in a show of friendly ties between the two nations' navies.
The warships -- a 4,000-ton Peresvet landing ship and a 1,500- ton SB-37 rescue vessel -- carry a total of 264 crew members including 18 Russian naval academy cadets, the South Korean Navy said in a press release.
The Russian seamen were warmly welcomed by their South Korean counterparts and local residents upon their arrival in Busan, some 450 km south of Seoul.
"Their trip is aimed at promoting friendly ties," said Lt. Choi Jong-il, spokesman for the Navy. "During their five-day stay, the Russian crew will visit the 3rd Fleet Command in Busan and the Naval Academy in the nearby city of Jinhae. They will also have various cultural and sports activities with South Korean soldiers. "
South Korea and Russia have exchanged visits of naval ships since 2003, he added.
The Russian ships are also scheduled to hold joint search-and- rescue drills with vessels from the Navy.
