A civilian was killed and up to 24 others were injured in a roadside bomb explosion in the Shiite neighborhood of Sadr City in eastern Baghdad on Wednesday, an Interior Ministry source said.
"Our latest reports said that a civilian was killed and 24 others injured, some were in critical condition," the source said citing medical sources from the nearby hospitals.
A roadside bomb went off near a busy parking lot in the neighborhood of Sadr City, apparently targeted a passing U.S. patrol, which escaped the explosion unhurt, the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.
The blast also destroyed several civilian minibuses and cars in the area, he added.
Iraqi security forces rushed to the area to secure the scene, while ambulances ferried the victims to nearby hospitals, the source said.
Earlier, the source put the toll from the attack at a civilian killed and 12 others injured.
Sadr City is a stronghold for Mahdi Army militia loyal to radical Shiite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr, who declared recently a suspension armed activities for six months.
