The Sri Lankan government said Wednesday that powerful C4 explosives had been detected in a Colombo suburb.
Acting on information received from a civilian, police found 14 packets of explosives containing 7 kg of C4 near the railway track in the southern suburb of Dehiwala at around 9:40 a.m. (0410 GMT), defense officials said.
The resultant search operation led to the discovery of four more packets of explosives, the Dehiwala police said.
Defense experts say C4 explosives are usually used by the rebel Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in their battle against government troops in the island's ethnic conflict.
The government has accused the rebels of attempting to use chemical weapons after a series of detections of acid being transported to rebel controlled areas from other places of the island.
The LTTE has been fighting the government since the mid-1980s to establish a separate homeland for the minority Tamils in the north and east claiming discrimination at the hands of the Sinhala majority.
