UN Secretary-General Ban Ki- moon said Wednesday that the establishment of a UN-African-Union ( AU) hybrid operation in Darfur is making steady progress.
In his latest report to the Security Council on the preparations for the UN-AU hybrid operation in Darfur, known as UNAMID, Ban said the deployment process would involve "enormously complex logistical operation in an area that is vast, remote and lacking in infrastructure."
"The unequivocal cooperation of all stakeholders is required in order for the United Nations to successfully overcome those challenges," he said.
He called on member states to urgently provide the outstanding military contributions that are critical for UNAMID to fulfill its challenging mandate.
He also expresses his deep concern about the escalation of violence in Darfur in recent weeks, and about the reports of police action taken on Aug. 21 in the Kalma camp for internally displaced persons.
