Visiting Secretary General of the United Nations Ban Ki-moon announced in Fashir, North Darfur State, on Wednesday that the UN would work to provide necessary support for the conflict-torn western Sudanese region of Darfur.
Ban made the announcement at a meeting with representatives of the Sudanese government in Darfur, local political parties and internally displaced persons (IDPs).
The UN and the international society would extend assistance to the IDPs to help them to return to their homelands, Ban told the representatives.
He disclosed that before coming to Darfur, he had carried out a number of contacts with the international community to seek support and assistance for Darfur.
The UN chief said that he would do his best to solve the lack of water in this region in order to prevent it from being a burden for the hybrid peacekeeping operation to be conducted by the UN and the African Union, and prevent the operation from being a reason worsening the water crisis in the region.
The representatives of the IDPs reiterated their readiness to voluntarily go back to their homelands, calling on the UN to secure necessary facilitation for their return, including rebuilding their villages and providing basic services.
The UN secretary general arrived in Fashir earlier Wednesday, on the third day of his first official visit in Sudan. Then he paid a short visit to Al-Salam Camp for IDPs, one of the three camps on the outskirts of Fashir.
This is the first visit of a UN secretary general in Darfur since the conflict erupted in February 2003.
