The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Business Summit was opened Thursday in Australia's harbor city of Sydney. The following is a brief introduction to the event:

The APEC Business Summit, formerly known as the APEC CEO Summit, has been held each year since 1996. It was officially recognized as a sideline event of the APEC Economic Leaders Meeting at the leaders meeting in Auckland in 1999.

Considered the biggest annual event of the business community of the Asia-Pacific region, the event usually also draws presence of some of the presidents and prime ministers of the APEC member economies. It thus provides opportunities for business leaders in the region to hear presentations from and to engage in discussions with APEC economic leaders, policy makers, academia on the most critical economic and business issues facing the region.

The Business Summit this year has adopted the theme of the APEC Australia 2007 year: "Strengthening our community, building a sustainable future."
