New Zealand Foreign Minister Winston Peters condemned Thursday the Fiji interim government's decision to re-impose emergency regulations.
He said the move is a clear signal that it is unwilling to heed the calls that have been made by the Pacific islands Forum and other key partners to get Fiji back on track to constitutional government.
Fiji's interim prime minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama said Thursday the emergency regulation was invoked at mid-day.
Bainimarama said what the ousted prime minister Qarase's words "have hurt the progress of the interim regime."
Qarase returned to Suva from his home island in Vanuabalavu at the weekend, nine months since the army removed him from power in a bloodless coup which was followed by emergency regulation until this May.
New Zealand Foreign Minister said he has asked New Zealand Acting High Commissioner in Suva to seek an emergency meeting of the Fiji/Pacific Islands Forum Joint Working Group to seek an explanation from the interim government as to the justifications for, and the likely duration of "this outrageous measure."
