Jordan and Hungary have launched a series of new initiatives aimed at increasing trade, tourism and cultural exchange between the two countries, Hungarian ambassador to Jordan Geza Miholy was quoted by the Jordan Times on Thursday.

For the next two months, the two countries will lay groundwork for increased cooperation in the investment, agriculture, education and environment protection sectors.

Several memoranda of understanding were signed in these fields, including a key initiative focuses on increasing Jordan's agricultural exports to Hungary, which would entail fruits and vegetables that were out of season in Europe between November and April, he said.

According to Miholy, Hungary will support Jordan in areas of infrastructure development, environment protection, water management, agriculture and information technology.

The ambassador said Hungary was eager to see these initiatives flourish, adding that an action plan was under way to establish implementation mechanisms.

According to official figures, Hungarian exports to Jordan amounted 105.32 million U.S. dollars last year, up from 7.8 million dollars in 2001, while imports stood at 3.948 million dollars in 2006, up from 87,000 dollars in 2001.

Main exports were fruits and vegetables, medicines, chemicals and related raw materials, whereas imports included mobile phones, food, industrial products, electronic equipment, chemicals and textiles as well as medicines.
