Talks on Poland hosting a U.S. missile defence base can be completed by the end of the year, U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Daniel Fried said on Thursday.
Daniel Fried, who is a guest at the Economic Forum in Krynica, southern Poland, told reporters that there will be several negotiation rounds which might be slowed down by Poland's political calendar.
"There is no official date for the conclusion of the talks. In view of Poland's political calendar informal consultations will be held with Poland's leading opposition parties," Fried was quoted by Polish PAP news agency.
A new round of U.S.-Polish talks on the anti-missile system are to be held in Warsaw on Thursday and Friday.
"It will be a particularly important stage in the talks. It will concern the terms on which a possible agreement will be signed that will lay down all details of mutual obligations," Spokesman for Polish foreign minister Robert Szaniawski said here last Tuesday.
"Poland wants to sign a long-term accord that will give Poland benefits in the area of security, political and technological cooperation with the United States," said the spokesman.
If the base comes into being, Poland wants it to be subject to Polish jurisdiction, and the construction and operation of such a base must not be financed by Polish taxpayers, the spokesman said.
The United States wants to deploy part of its anti-missile shield in eastern Europe -- a radar system in the Czech Republic and a missile interceptor site in Poland.
Polish-U.S. talks on the possible deployment have been ongoing since May.
