About 50 out of over 600 Vietnamese press agencies are making profits, local newspaper Young People on Friday quoted a senior official as saying.
"Now, over 100 out of more than 600 press agencies are financially independent (not relying on state budget). But only 50 out of the over 100 are profitable,"said Vietnamese deputy minister of Information and Communication Do Quy Doan.
In a national information development strategy, Vietnam allows the establishment of press groups, and encourages newspapers and magazines under a specific ministry to restructure into a strong united press agency which have different publications, he said.
Under the strategy, each ministry will, by 2010, have a newspaper, which is its mouthpiece, and a research magazine.
