Greek Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis said on Thursday night that a new vote will be held if no party wins a majority in the general elections set for Sept. 16.
"If there is no majority in the elections on Sept. 16, new elections will be taking place," Karamanlis said during a televised debate among the leaders of six political parties in the country, including the ruling New Democracy, which came to power in March 2004.
The party chiefs focused their debate on foreign policy, economy, public administration, education, social policy and general political issues.
The other five political parties were the Panhellenic Socialist Movement, the Greek Communist Party, the Coalition of the Radical Left, the Popular Orthodox Rally and the Dimokratiki anagenisi.
Karamanlis said the government is in the middle of a difficult and uphill path and must continue to move forward with greater determination.
"We can achieve a great deal if we move forward united. I believe that a government is necessary that will go ahead with the necessary interventions, the necessary changes and the necessary reforms to enable our country to become competitive," Karamanlis said.
The prime minister also talked about the state system, saying bureaucracy has been curbed but a great deal has yet to be done and reforms are moving ahead.
On foreign policy, Karamanlis stressed that Greece plays a leading role in the region and serves as a bridge for the countries of southeastern Europe.
