At least three civilians have been killed in a mine explosion in eastern Sri Lanka, defense officials said Friday.
Civilians were traveling on a tractor to collect sand at Ervaur in the eastern Batticaloa district at around 10.30 a.m. local time (0500 GMT) when the pressure mine hit the tractor killing them.
The police blamed the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) rebels for the blast.
Civilians get caught in the escalation of the armed conflict between the LTTE and the government troops.
Hundreds of thousands them were displaced in the region as clashes erupted in July 2006.
The government now claims that the entire eastern province had been rid of the rebels in successive military operations since September of last year.
