The Arab League (AL) on Friday condemned Thursday's terrorist attack in Algeria, which has left about 19 people dead and 107 others injured, Egypt's official news agency MENA reported.
Alaa Roushdi, spokesman for AL Secretary General Amr Moussa, voiced the pan-Arab bloc's solidarity with the Algerian people in fighting against terrorism and offered condolence to the families of the victims.
On Thursday afternoon, a suicide bombing attack occurred at the town of Batna, some 450 km east of the Algerian capital Algiers, apparently targeting Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika who had planned to visit the region.
The suicide attacker, who was among the crowd welcoming Bouteflika, detonated the explosives he was carrying before the president arrived.
Although the situation has greatly improved in Algeria in recent years, sporadic attacks continue to be reported in isolated parts of the country.
Two almost simultaneous suicide bombing attacks, one of which was targeted at the seat of the government in downtown Algiers, killed around 33 people and injured over 200 others on April 11.
