UN Secretary-General Ban Ki- moon strongly condemned on Friday the "terrorist" bombing in Algeria that has killed about 20 people and may have targeted the country's president.
"The secretary-general strongly condemns the terrorist bombing that reportedly targeted the convoy of President Abdelaziz Bouteflika on 6 September" in eastern Algeria, killing and wounding a large number of innocent civilians, Ban's press office said in a statement.
"The secretary-general extends his solidarity and his condolences to the government and people of Algeria and in particular to the families of the victims," the statement said.
The UN chief "urges once again that the international community work together to reject and to combat terrorism in all of its expressions," it added.
The attack occurred Thursday afternoon in the city of Batna, 450 kilometers east of the Algerian capital of Algiers, when the local population was preparing to welcome the president who is on a tour of development projects in the area.
